My morning routine involves a diet of strange and wonderful podcasts including the thought-provoking TEDtalk series.
Today, I watched the Seth Priebatsch from scvngr talking about how the social web is pretty much built, next up is the building of the game layer on top.
Certainly an interesting perspective especially with <clench>gamification</clench> being liberally used in lots of recent discussions around the industry, including a recent paper from Wired UK's David Rowan.

UPDATE: A more recent list of events that still have availability has been published here.
When we started the shenanigans that is Social Media Week London (Chinwag is the lead organiser), we estimated there'd be a maximum of 70 events with about 5,000 people attending. And we'd probably had a drink and were feeling ambitious at the time.
Yesterday, we breezed past the 5,000 RSVP mark for registrations at events across the week and the number of events (and believe us, it's tricky keeping track) passed the 80 mark.
Some of the events are full, and others filling up quickly, so one of our volunteers (thanks Anne) went through the whole list to find all of the events that still have space available.
Peruse the list below and click on the links for further info. If you're going to come along, please do RSVP to give the event organisers an idea on numbers. Any questions, the quickest response is via @smwldn. Hope to see you at some of the events...
Founded by ex University College London student Rich Martel, Floxx, "dating" social network Floxx is hitting the headlines. In its first day online the site managed to attract a whopping 6,000 visitors and, over the following few days, over 1,000 posts.
Pretty impressive but could it be the next Facebook?
Floxx officially went live on Jan 10th this year but quietly sneaked
online a few days before that on the 3rd. Like its old incarnation Fit Finder,
Floxx is aimed at students; letting them post messages online, on a
public platform,
about an attractive stranger who has caught their eye.
A lot of people talk about blogger outreach but what does it mean and how does it add value? Here’s an overview of what it involves, what you should expect and some tips on how to get the best results.
At its simplest level blogger outreach is the integration of blogger relationships into a Social CRM strategy. By building long-term relationships with relevant and interested bloggers it’s possible to open up a whole new means of broadcasting your message to niche audiences who are actively interested and engaged. In addition, word-of-mouth recommendations from bloggers can be very influential, especially if they have a faithful readership that trust and follow their opinions.
However, it’s worth noting that blogger outreach is one of the hardest aspects of Social CRM to get right as a poorly thought-out strategy can easily backfire and possibly even damage your brand or reputation online. Bloggers can be savage and merciless in exposing ill-informed or overly tactical approaches, and this is why (most but not all) PR agencies often get it wrong.
In the US and Europe, iPhone and Android handsets might be grabbing all the headlines, but in the notoriously tricky Chinese market, Nokia is king of the app stores.
In a recent post on Mobile Entertainment blog, they reported:
Local study gives Nokia a 65.2 per cent share. According to the IResearch, Ovi is trouncing the competition, and leading the mighty China Mobile app store, which is currently accessed by 57.7 per cent of China's mobile subscribers.
Following the recent announcement of the UKTI Trade Mission to South by South West (SXSW) Interactive 2011 (10th-15th March), there's some rather good news for digital firms based in London who need a helping-hand to take part in the mission.
The marvellous people at UK Trade & Investment London have announced that they have secured 10 grants of up to £500 (tbc) available for digital companies based inside the M25. It's January, the days are short. The rain is lashing down. Yes, it's that time of year when digital folks minds drift towards Austin, Texas and the massive annual gathering that is South by South West Interactive.
Last year over saw over 14,000+ delegates from 54 countries attend 450 conference sessions and this year promises to be bigger than ever. Alongside the interactive conference, there's also SXSW Film and the legendary SXSW Music festival.
SXSW (or South-by to those in the know) has some form as a trend-setter, it's credited with helping Twitter really take-off. Ditto with FourSquare. What'll it be this year?
It's a unique experience, an a great opportunity for UK digital firms to meet the broadest possible audience from the US digital industry, and from across the globe. 300 Brits made the trip last year and there'll certainly be a large number heading West this time around.
Supporting these UK digital firms, UK Trade & Investment are organising a trade mission to SXSW, including:
Save the date: 7th-11th Feb 2011. In less than four weeks London joins New York, San Francisco, Rome, Paris, Toronto, Sao Paulo, Hong Kong and Istanbul for Social Media Week 2011.
Over 500 tickets have been have booked already, but there's still time to grab yours. Keep an eye on the schedule as events are being added every day, we're expecting over 70, double last year's total.
The Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2011 is the world’s largest professionals-only game industry event. GDC 2011, taking place between 28th February and 2nd March, commemorates its 25th edition and serves as a testament of how far the industry has come and as a celebration of its bright future.
UK Trade & Investment are supporting UK firms attending GDC with two sessions providing an opportunity to connect with leading US publishers, understand the trends in the US market and showcase their wares to an international audience.
