Using UX and Visualization to Give You an Edge?

This hands-on workshop introduces recent advances in Information Visualisation and illustrates powerful examples through which users can make sense of data. We use the visualization as interventions that help us develop designs to benefit the user experience. We argue that 'data experiences' can be enhanced by combining UX thinking and visualisation design.
We will introduce visualisation design and compare visualisation and UX design processes. Participants are then provided with a data design problem where they will have an opportunity to work in teams to develop possible visualisation solutions through this approach.
At the end of the workshop you have an understanding of what visualisation can offer the user experience and perhaps an ability to think more visually when developing and applying design solutions. You’ll have experience of having used visualisation in UX - an interesting intervention that may help with creative thinking. You will also be given an opportunity to reflect on what you learned with other participants as we consider whether using UX and visualisation can give you and your users an edge.
N.B. In this session, you will be able to try some of the visualization out... so bring with you a laptop, pencils and feltpens to try some sketching in practice!!!
Paula de Matos is an independent UX consultant. Paula originally trained as a software developer, then moved to bridging the gap between users and developers in the role of Group Coordinator and User Experience Analyst at the European Bioinformatics Institute. In 2012, she completed a Master's in Human Computer Interactions at University College London, and has extensive experience in complex data fields, specifically the life sciences and biotech sectors. Jason Dykes is a Professor of Visualisation at City University London where he designs and evaluates algorithms, approaches and systems that make sense of data with colleagues at the giCentre. Jason’s background is in Geography and Cartography and his work explores the opportunities for combining spatial and aspatial characteristics and representations of data. Jason has had papers at IEEE Information Visualization every year since 2007 and chaired the conference in 2014. In the last few months he has given a keynote at GIScience in Vienna, co-organised a creative workshop on The Death of the Desktop at IEEE VIS, been appointed to the IEEE Information Visualization Steering Committee, founded the Velo Club de Vis and participated in its inaugural ride - #LeTourDeVIS.
