Description

Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink: Using Mobile Technology to Influence Behaviour
By Dr Jon Bird (City University London)

This session will begin with a description of three research projects in which technology and mobile applications have been used to nudge behaviour. I'll talk about the development of a shopping trolley to influence supermarket shoppers' purchases and how this led to the development of a mobile app. There will also be an overview of the Tidy Street project where a residential road was turned in to a public display of the streets' electricity consumption and how this influenced the residents' energy consumption behaviour.

All three projects use two nudge techniques (social norms and salience) that come from the MINDSPACE framework. I'll give an overview of this framework and discuss how these different nudge techniques work.

The aim is to give people an insight into the effectiveness of different nudging techniques as well as making them aware of some of the limitations and challenges in using them. As part of the session we'll be sketching some designs for behaviour change technologies and considering how they can be used (and abused) to influence people. By the end of the session people should be able to incorporate these techniques into their own designs.

Dr Jon Bird is a lecturer in pervasive computing at City University London. He has been involved in designing and evaluating a number of behaviour change technologies, ranging from interactive shopping trolleys to large scale public displays of community energy consumption.
