This course which builds on the knowledge gained at CodeMaker, by focusing on management techniques and methodologies in software projects. The project manager behind a digital project is often not a programmer, or software engineer however s/he will regularly have to make choices that require technical understanding.This course will enhance planning, scoping and management skills of web and mobile projects and introduces agile methods.
This can range from what programming framework to use – is it Ruby, Joomla, Drupal, or PhP – to deciding which programmer to hire and how to keep them on target. It is their job to translate a project from the idea stage into a realistic plan that can be implemented within budget and on time. The course teaches how to scope projects, build concise requirement lists as well as concepts such as agile software management practises and Minimum Viable Product development. Topics covered include:
- Key components of software development management
- Scoping and how to build a minimum viable product
- Understanding programmers minds
- Due diligence
- Contracts
- Outsourced vs in-house work
- Agile software management
- Web development management tools
- Quality control
- How to deal with problems when they arise
Previous experience required: the CodePlanner course requires a basic understanding of how websites and mobile apps work, web and information architecture. It is recommended, but not necessary, to attend the CodeMaker course to benefit best from what the CodePlanner course teaches.
The Coaches
Peter Brownell
Peter has spent the last 18 years as a developer and development team coach. He’s co-founded a start-up (schoolofeverything.com), the UK branch of the Drupal Open Source Developer community (drupal.org), and runs one of the UK’s most established Drupal consultancies (codepositive.com). Peter has significant speaking and teaching experience, and he’s also an artist, activist and aspirational gardener.
Tim Diggins
Tim leads Red56, a boutique software company. Tim has 20 years experience as a lead developer, CTO and consultant on technical development. He has both worked on large scale software projects and start ups. He specializes in agile coaching and high end, bespoke UX design. Tim also holds an MA in Modern Greek Poetry from Oxford, so if you want to chat about how Prometheus brought technology to humanity you can have these discussions in your lunch break.
