introduction. Needless to say, we're very excited to bringing it to
Cardiff!
TEDxCardiff is brought to you by Claire Scantlebury of
Cardiff Web Scene and Neil Cocker of Nocci (Network of Creative and
Cultural Industries).
TEDx is a new program that enables local
communities to organize, design and host their own independent, TED-like
events.

WENDY SADLER
Wendy is a physics graduate with a passion for communication and a strong belief in the power of performance as a tool for engaging a wider audience with STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). She is the founding Director of ‘science made simple’ and since setting up the organisation in 2002 she has won numerous awards for her work, including IOP Young Professional Physicist of the Year, WISE excellence award, Institute of Acoustics Award for Promoting Acoustics to the Public and she was one of the UKRC ‘Woman of Outstanding Achievement’ in 2008. In 2007 she also awarded the prestigious EU Descartes Prize for Innovative Action in Science Communication – following in the footsteps of Sir David Attenborough and Bill Bryson before her.
In 2007, Wendy established the ‘Engineering Explained’ initiative as a special project within science made simple to develop a range of new shows and activities that focused on Engineering and that targeted large school and festival audiences.
She has an MSc in Science Communication and was awarded a distinction for her research project on the impact of science shows. She has also written 19 books for children and presented a range of science programmes for ITV Wales and BBC Radio Wales.
TARA BUSCH
It’s great news that US artist Tara Busch will be doing a special performance just for us. Tara is a music maker, producer and, in her own words, a “gear pornographer”. Her acclaimed blog about analogue synths has thousands of readers, and her recent album was very warmly received by critics and fans alike. JO TAYLOR
As Head of Marketing & Communications Jo Taylor is responsible for
generating and sustaining audiences and ticket office income for Wales
Millennium Centre. The marketing team focuses on retaining existing
audiences through developing relationships, as well as igniting new
curiosity to attract first time visitors.
Jo is passionate about bringing audiences and cultural experiences together, having worked in the field of arts marketing for 16 years. She previously held the position of Head of Marketing for Welsh National Opera and has also worked for St George’s Bristol, Bath Festivals Trust, The Custard Factory Arts & Media Centre and National Youth Music Theatre.
Jo is a Director of the Board for the Arts Marketing Association and Audiences Wales.
RUFFSTYLZ & BEATBOX FOZZY
We’re very pleased to offer something different at TEDxCardiff, with a five minute showcase of beatboxing and rapping offered by Cardiff’s own Ruffstylz and Beatbox Fozzy, both from the local Associated Minds stable.
After originally honing his craft in London, Ruffstylz’s primary claim to fame is as the world record holder for the longest freestyle rap. Clocking in at a throat-lacerating17 hours, in aid of Oxfam, he said, “It was more difficult than I thought it would be, I hit a wall early on but it actually got easier as time went on.”
A sometime hip-hop journalist with Hip-Hop Connection magazine, the spoken word represents Ruffstylz’s true lifeblood, describing himself as “an MC who’s out to use words in the best ways possible”.
Initially inspired to pick up the microphone (and abuse it) by the work of pioneering US mouth manipulation master and former The Roots member Rahzel, Beatbox Fozzy may barely be out of his teens but has crammed much into a promising career to date.
Able to replicate the lowest bass thump right through to the highest sweet soul sample, often at the same time with considerable vocal dexterity, Fozzy was crowned champion of the Vauxhall UK Beatbox Championships in 2007, and went on to tour with Dizzee Rascal.

DAVE HAYNES
Dave Haynes is UK manager for SoundCloud, a cloud-based music platform that allows music professionals to easily distribute, share and stream audio over the web. With over a decade’s experience in the music industry, Dave’s career has moved from selling good old fashioned records to focusing on the latest trends in digital music. Along the way he has released his own album, DJ’ed across Europe, run a label, worked in digital distribution and founded a successful niche MP3 download store. As well as his work for SoundCloud he is the organiser of OpenMusicMedia and Music Hack Day events.
ROBERT SIMPSON
Robert Simpson is an astrophysicist currently working at Cardiff University. He runs the popular astronomy blog Orbiting Frog, where he not only shares news but also develops online astronomy tools and websites. In 2008 he created a conference series called ‘.Astronomy’ which explores the connections between network technologies and astronomical research. Robert has been communicating science and astronomy to the public for many years, and is now concluding his PhD in star formation. We’re very excited to announce Steve Robinson as a speaker at TEDxCardiff. He’s travelled the world, bringing us some of the most incredible images from the globe’s wildest and beautiful places, most notably with explorer Bruce Parry.
Steve is an award-winning adventure film-maker with over 14 years experience in factual television. He started his career as a trainee reporter on the Cambrian News in Lampeter, West Wales, where he quickly rose to become Farming Editor. Before founding Indus in 2005, Steve was a senior producer in BBC Wales’ factual department, where he created and series produced the BAFTA-nominated Tribe with Bruce Parry. Other directing credits include The Man Who Jumped to Earth (BBC One), Extreme Lives, (BBC One) the BAFTA-nominated Ellen MacArthur: Sailing Through Heaven and Hell and Everest: Getting to the Bottom of a Mountain for BBC4.
Credits for INDUS include series producing and directing Amazon with Bruce Parry for BBC2 and Discovery. Steve is Executive producer on most of Indus’ network and international output including Everest ER for BBC One, Expedition Alaska and Venom Hunter for the Discovery Channel.
Steve will be talking about his experiences filming “Tribe” and “Amazon”, and what we can learn from those tribes that he spent time with.

We loved DK’s talk at Ignite last year so much that we asked him if he’d like to do a TEDxCardiff talk. And he’s come up with a brilliant idea. He’s asking 100 people (aged 1-100) about what inspires them. He’s going to publish the results in a free e-book and present the results to us on the 14th April. DK is the founder of MediaSnackers. MediaSnackers was a term he coined back in early 2006 whilst describing what young people were doing with media—the site was launched a few months later in June.
He has an educational background in communications and media, plus a professional background in local government (he was the UK’s first and only Corporate Youth Officer… oooh!).
PAUL CLARKE
Paul Clarke has a 15-year background in public service information, having worked in most of the large government departments – and across local authorities – on technology and business change programmes. This included two years as Head of Strategic Proposition for Directgov. He has specialised in recent years in digital strategy, and how technologies such as social media can support engagement between citizens and government. In the social media world he is known for the “Tweetbike” – a mash-up between Twitter and a motorbike, to rescue stranded commuters during Tube strikes – and for creating a data standard that allowed users’ reports of snow conditions (‘#uksnow’) to be made into a useful, real-time map.
Paul is passionate about photography, and the ways in which image can enhance other forms of communication. He has documented much of the social media and technology ’scene’ in London and across the UK, and is working on a project that links together his interest in citizen/government engagement with his love of striking images. His other great interests are music (particularly the science of harmony), psychotherapy, and the challenges faced by men in a world of changed expectations and equalities.
