On 10/6/99 I read:

It is on the shoulders of your friends the techies that you and your
company stand, Andy; inverted snobbery should be left in the real
world. The net is the ultimate leveller - making it free makes it
valuable; making it accessible makes it powerful.
Your average FreeServe customer is what we want - the net is about
true democracy and freedom of expression - enfranchising and
empowering the individual - we like it if we can get you started on
this journey at no cost.
But some people will always pay to get online - to BBSs, newswires,
specialist information sources and gaming sites, for instance, take
time, money and effort to create and sometimes, though not always, it
is appropriate to recoup your costs: I think those who use these
types of service feel that what they get is worth the (generally
trivial) amount they spend.
