I tried this recently, and found that it only works with certain image
file types. If I import a PNG, I can do this. If I import a JPG,
however, I cannot.
I discovered a way to tell an imported JPG [appears in the Library as a
bitmap, not a symbol] to use PNG compression rather than JPG. This
permitted me to key changes in the alpha setting for a symbol that uses
this bitmap.
Right-click [Command-click] the bitmap; choose 'Properties'. Find the
pull-down list called 'Compression' ....
