Why apply? Why Japan?
The Japanese ICT market is the second largest in the world with sales of over US$ 970 billion.
This mission can help your business find opportunities in Japan and is targeted at innovative products, technologies and services in the following areas:
- Low-power electronics
- Green IT & Smart Grid technology
- Mobile & Wireless Communications
- e-healthcare
- Image processing, surveillance & sensors
- Embedded Software
- Semiconductor technology and IP licensing
The British Embassy in Tokyo and the Consulate-General in Osaka will be working closely with UK Trade and Investment to create a programme that will add real value to companies coming to Japan with the mission. Participation by those offering innovative products/technologies and services are most welcome.

The two Innovative ICT seminars provide a unique opportunity to present to Japan's major ICT firms, for example Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, Fujitsu. Each seminar includes a 20 minute presentation slot for the companies with simultaneous translation and the the chance to network with key representatives from the companies at evening receptions.
What's included in the mission?
- Pre-mission assistance and advice
- Pre-mission webinar briefing with the UKTI team in Japan and London
- Pre-mission publicity in Japan (e.g. through Embassy/Consulate-General and local partners' websites )and UKTI Japan ICT team newsletter sent to over 2000 companies
- Two-centre trip focusing on Tokyo and Osaka
- Visit briefing by a local industry specialist at the British Embassy/Consulate-General
- Opportunity to participate in seminars in Tokyo and Osaka involving the country’s leading ICT companies eg. Sony, Sharp, Panasonic and Fujitsu. (NB for those companies interested in meeting with UK companies, arrangements will be made)
- Networking receptions in both Osaka and Tokyo

This is the draft schedule and may be subject to change. Time has been allocated for travel and for companies to either arrange their own meetings, or use UKTI's OMIS service (at additional cost) to arrange one-to-one meetings.
Who should apply?
This mission is ideal for companies who are new or have limited experience of the Japanese games market. The aim is to provide in-depth briefings covering the challenges of working in Japan and the opportunities to work leading organisations in the Japanese ICT industry.
To be considered for the UKTI Innovative ICT mission to Japan, your company must be classified as an UK-based SME:
- UK headquartered
- Innovative
- Ready to do business in Japan
- Cover travel and accommodation costs
- Cover event expenses (£1000 payable on acceptance)
- Are classed as Small or Medium Sized: < 250 staff, <€50m turnover
How to apply
The application process is designed to help companies understand how they can benefit from the mission and make the most of the Japanese market.
Here's an outline of the process:
- Complete a simple application form (PDF preview) allows the team in Japan to tailor the attendees at the ICT seminars, as well as providing marketing material
- Each application will be followed-up with a call from a member of the UKTI team in Tokyo to assess the opportunity in the Japanese market
- To confirm participation in the mission, companies will need to complete payment of the £1,000 fee N.B. this does not include travel/accommodation.

Travel & accommodation
There are numerous options for flights and hotels in Tokyo, although be warned it can be an expensive city and it's advisable to book as early as possible.
Travel and accommodation is left to the personal choice, but UKTI have negotiated a special rate at Swissotel Nankai Osaka and Hotel Monterey Hanzomon (see below).
