Newsgroups do tend to be used by technical people, but not just in IT.

I would advise against bombarding newsgroups with messages, for reasons that
I hope are obvious.

If you are going to use newsgroups, all you need to do is to identify the
ones of most interest, and then _participate_ in any discussion, making
reference to your URL if the rules of the group allow it.

We have had some success doing this for a client in the telecoms business
(business products, not consumer) because the technical nature of their
product is such that using newsgroups is one of the few ways of finding out
the answers to technical problems.

We just replied to requests that fell within the expertise of the client.

But for non-technical, consumer-oriented campaigns, I can't see that
newsgroups are of much use.

Other online communities may be and Sitelynx specialises in promoting to
online communities.

Or it may be worth doing one-to-one promotions.

But it's a bit difficult to say what you can without knowing more about the
product area.
