From "The Times":

West London men are new masters
of the universe

SOMEWHERE in Notting Hill, a male in his mid-twenties
from a wealthy middle-class family is about to become
an Internet millionaire.

It is a technological revolution supposedly available to
all, but the most exhaustive survey yet of online
entrepreneurs shows that a male metropolitan elite has
already grabbed the reins of the e-commerce boom.

A new index of Internet companies called the e25 has
been created by the consultancy Bain & Company.
Their analysis of more than 300 British-based
companies produced a top 25 concentrated in West
London.

The survey, which appears in next month's
Management Today, gives lastminute.com top marks.
The site for late holiday and entertainment bookings
was co-founded by Martha Lane Fox, 26, one of only
two women in the list. The other is Kajsa Leander, a
Swedish former model who co-founded boo.com, which
sells high-fashion sportswear.

Second place is given to qxl.com, the online auction
site sold this month for 280 million.

Nearly a fifth of the founders are under 30 but they did
not emerge from penury. Ms Lane Fox's father is an
Oxford don and her mother is the grand-daughter of
the sixth Marquess of Anglesey.

The one true rags-to-riches tale is that of Dylan Wilk,
the 25-year-old founder of gameplay.com. Born into a
poor family on a Batley council estate, he quit school to
work for a mail-order fish products company but left to
get into computer games. He received 2.6 million
when gameplay.com floated plus shares worth 4.3
million.

The report notes with concern that e-commerce is
becoming a "male-dominated" industry which is skewed
geographically. It reads: "When for the first time in
history we have an industry that, in theory could be
situated in the Orkneys or Penzance, we find that the
most obvious discernible cluster is centred in London's
Notting Hill. Plus ca change."
