Glad my comments sparked some debate, but I should clarify my previous
message in regards to Yahoo vs. Word.

I agree that Yahoo is a successful reference site with great functionality.
But it's the functional aspects of the user experience that clearly drove
the "designing" of it's form. The "look" of the design is logical but not
aesthetically exciting/aggressive/provocative. Which is appropriate for
it's function. Yahoo is intended to be the ultimate library visit; not a
sardonic literary e-zine.

To quote Jeffrey Veen (WIRED), "...Yahoo may be the quintessential example
of an online library. The uber-directory of Web sites does manage to convey
style and attitude, but underlying that is a simple, highly structured
hierarchy of information. This emphasis on structure and function over
presentation is appropriate for a reference site like Yahoo...."

My comments regarding the Yahoo.com design vs. the Word.com clone were
intended to point out that Word.com could have borrowed the navigational
hierarchy design without copying the same visual design.

what do you think it is then?

I'd say yahoo consistently beats the shit out of all other websites for
2 reasons only: design and functionality.

and being first with a simple and effective idea.
