All variables for text fields are in Flash. You can import text into
Flash using Load variables and use that directly or indirectly in your
text fields.
The text field does not care where the text comes from.

Flash has no built-in formatting for text that is imported using Load
Variables. This formatting could be added with the use of variables that
define the formatting and code that decodes these instructions.

Colin's Text-Field Scroll (or anyone else's) would not limit your being
able to import text from a text file and use it in the scroll.
