I joined this list for support in developing Flash applications.
I respect and admire the work that Macromedia has done developing
the application. I do however implore you to stop posting your threats
on the list. They only encourage the people you are trying to dissuade
(in my opinion). Can't you just forward their names to your legal
department and leave it at that? Let this community enforce its own
standard. Afterall, as a group, we seem to be doing a fine job of that
ourselves. Just look at the posts from people responding to ethical and
legal infringements of Macromedia's rights. You don't hear them saying,
"Oh, tell me more about Flash 5." ENOUGH.

Funny, huh?
I'm going to back up JD on this one.
If I run across some fool touting contraband stuff, I'll also turn him over
to the legal department. It's not out of vindictiveness, but mainly because
a) it's damaging to us, and b) people who flaunt this in a public forum are
really dumb.
Especially one with many MM employees reading it.

I'm aware that Dowdell works for Macromedia. What annoys me is that I've
worked with dozens of programmers, designers, and tech support people over
the years and none has ever felt the need to take on the additional role of
narc officer. Not once. Flash is a great program, but let's keep things in
perspective. If Macromedia has difficulty keeping betas under wraps, that
sounds like an internal security issue and not one to threaten a discussion
list with. Dowdell has helped numerous people with tech issues (and usually
without the recent condescending tone). I only ask that he keeps his
commentary constructive and not so heavy-handed.

James,
I think John Dowdell works for Macromedia. It kinda seems like maybe
people who are fooling around with a boot of Flash 5 ought to not make that
point public. Especially to employees of Macromedia. They tend to get
pissed when one of their major products is being distributed freely before
official release. John is chill as far as I know, I guess this irks him
when people stick this in his face. I mean I'm sure this is far worse than
pirated copies of Flash 4 in their eyes.

James,
You're obviously a Flash developer, right? Why would you want JD to
chill. He's
working to make your authoring tool better. People that pirate
pre-release
software and release information about it do harm in many ways to the
entire
community.
If somebody illegally got a hold of one of your projects that wasn't
even
finished and started spreading rumors that you're a horrible developer
based on
that, you'd have to spend incredible amounts of time doing damage
control to
protect your reputation and your business, taking time away from
finishing that
project.
I'm sure MM wants new versions of software to be as solid and well-built
as
possible and to bring them to market in a timely manner -- we want
nothing
less. Mr. Dog is providing an obstacle to that end. JD's words may sound
severe, but it's a severe issue.

ok, it's posted
http://pioneerdatasys.com/shift.html
if you can shed some light on the weirdness, I'd be tickled pink.
and sorry about the attachments, I plead newbieness.

Larissa,
well post it and tell us where it is so we can take a look . . .
jgl
BTW - not good to send attachments to the list . . . yours made it
somehow,
but that practice seems to tweak the in coming mail to this list
sometimes
and it causes a batch of posts to be delayed . . .

Subject: RE: FLASH: OT: Kid Rock's strictly Flash4-*only* site
fwiw, most people do already have the Macromedia Flash 4 Player
installed... according to Media Metrix's June consumer audit, 65% of their
focus groups could see Flash 4 content already, and over 90% could view at
least some Flash content.
A particular sub-audience may differ from those overall net norms, either
up or down... a site for accountants may have a much smaller percentage,
but at an entertainment-based site it's reasonable to conclude that nearly
all may already have the Macromedia Flash 4 Player installed. (For the
remainder, we're still seeing over ten millions completed downloads each
week.)
Each site needs to determine when to take advantage of new abilities.
Different sites will migrate at different times.
