Hi all,

There is no perfect standard size (aspect ratio) for a Flash movie in a
standard browser windows. If you are designing for full screen
projectors it should be an aspect ratio of 1.33 such as 640x480. If you
design at 1280x960 at normal zoom size both will look the same but you
will find you can zoom in more times on details (6 times instead of 5).
This is counter-balanced by your having to do more zooming out and in in
the authoring environment.

One common technique is to match the background color of the HTML page
to the Flash movie. An expert technique is to overscan the background
past the stage limits.
See http://www.FlashBible.com/
Resize your window wide you will see the background expands out past the
normal canvas. Resize it so it is higher than wide and you will see the
railroad track bed extends down past the normal canvas. We will probably
bring the tracks down some too.
