do a business plan, if you do this process professionally you will learn a great deal of what you need to know. You will also learn that you have a lot to learn even after you complete the plan. It will increase your chances of success by 80%  just doing a business plan. But you will probably find it to be one of the most difficult tasks you have ever done (if it isn't your probably not digging deep enough) but it is also one of the most rewarding tasks it instills a sense of direction and confidence in the decisions you will be forced to make.
