Unfortunately, I was not exagerating.. my IT department knows very little
about streaming technologies and Flash, so therefore they think that a T-1
line is all I need to test websites on. The bandwidth profiler is great
when your doing basic testing, and Flash movies without imported movie
clips.. But when you start testing the bandwidth profiler on Flash sites
with a lot of scripting, imported movie clips, sound, music, scenes, and
complex animations.. then the results of the profiler are no longer
reliable. The Bandwidth profiler lists all imported movie clips as less
than 1 byte of data, which is obviously incorrect. You also have to realize
that a lot of these websites will also contain plain HTML, javascript, jpgs,
gifs, and other non-flash content that also need to be taken into account
when your testing the download process.. Will a browser not load anything
until it compiles a javascript command? Will a web page be barren of all
images until a flash movie is completed its entire animation? These are
things that the profiler cant do. On top of all of that, the internet is a
congested place, and seeing how a 56k modem reacts to varying conditions as
it downloads your website is the best and only way to truely know how your
website will look to an ordinary visitor. A 56k modem software similator is
a step in the right direction, but there is no substitute for a real 56k
modem.

To make matters worse.. the clients look at our photoshop generated jpg
mock-ups and assume that they are completely functional websites... so we
now end up with huge Flash websites that incorporate tons of bitmaps where
we originally wanted vector based art. and with no 56k modem to test these
huge websites, its getting way out of hand.

I suspect that the original post is slightly exagerrated--either that or the
IT people really are stupid.

You are familiar with Flash's "Bandwidth Profiler" aren't you? Just
asking--I know it doesn't do everything, but it's a great design and does
work for many things.
