For anyone who has been doing any web development outside of flash and has
had a good look at NN6 will see that they have left us out in the cold. By
dropping all proprietary tags they have created a product that in no way is
backward compatible. Hardly something that will help developers out.

Yes but the fact that none of the versions of IE are compliant with all the
standard web technologies (HTML 4,CSS,DOM etc) which have been around for a
while as W3C recommendations doesn't effect any additions the browser makers
want to add on.
The latest version of Netscape has been completely overhauled to support
these basic standards and more as well, plus NN6 will be more configurable
and extendable than IE 5. I only wish that MS could get the basic's right
before creating these extra features that are not core to its prime purpose
i.e. browse the web.
As for a striped down version that supports standards try Opera (its not
perfect but its getting better).
