Yes, the soften edges works well for drop shadows, a cautionery warning
though.....keep an eye on the file size as the soften edge is creating a
stack of polygons to achieve the effect, much like the old illustrator 3
used to...still worth using though.

A well positioned grad filled polygon with alpha setting can be more
efficient.
