I think what Microsoft are trying to do is some how re-form the Home PC in a
way to a small budget box code named x-box, which will include powerful 128
bit gaming capabilities such as the Dreamcast and PS2
They want to then get the manufacturing of PC's to make this box, companies
such as Dell, Gateway and Compaq.
Win 2000 is quite heavily focused on DirectX as their gaming platform, and
graphics platform, this will be the O/S
They will then GET/BUY developers to create games on this much more powerful
and simpler "development wise" platform.
This box will of course have an Intel 500+ chip (not forgeting their buddy),
and be able to access the Internet and run all of the new styled Internet
Based office software Microsoft plans to bring out.
And they probably want to do this for $299 per box. and getting co-op from
operations like games makers, net access + content.
In other words world domination, they don't want to leave any stone
unturned, for a company so big to have such a dynamic/changeable business
model it really impresses me.
this is all a guess though.
