How did the case come about if nobody outside NU saw the emails?
I don't know the exact details of the case, but a member of staff must
have passed the message on to someone outside the NU - probably a less
than happy employee. Can't trust anyone these days!

There has been a recent case where comments on email have led to
a
successful lawsuit.
In July, Norwich Union Healthcare agreed to pay damages of
450,000 to
rival insurers Western Provident Association after libellous
rumours
about WPA's financial position were circulated by e-mail between
Norwich
Union staff, suggesting that Western Provident was insolvent and
was
being investigated by the Department of Trade and Industry.
The interesting thing about this case was that the email was
internal
and never sent to a third party.
