On this note it would be interesting to see the share of web sites designed
with hopelessly inflated HTML generated by consumer software (no names here
!). I could well imagine Geocities or Tripod shrink substantially after a
HTML 'cleanup'.

Or how about limiting META keywords to 10 ?

Worth bearing in mind that it's not just a question of fast web servers.
Most people using the Internet are getting slower and slower access as the
number of dial-up users increases and the bottlenecks get worse. Faster web
severs won't help much. Smaller and fewer gifs, less Java and more efficient
and effective use of html, etc, will.

Any services accessible on the internet should be programmed efficiently
because there will always be bandwidth restrictions. This principle should
in my view be written into the UN Convention on Human Rights. Greenpeace
should take up the cause against bandwidth pollution.

Disasters loom and nobody will care until they happen. Just like train
crashes, ozone depletion and nuclear accidents. At some point within the
next few years there will be a major catastrophe that could have been
avoided had the net not been so clogged.

And closer to home, 10% more efficient code, means 10% (maybe) less time
wasted.
