I always thought that the Yahoo only charged for 'express listings', in
other words if you pay your $199 you are guaranteed consideration for
inclusion in their listings within 7 days. My understanding was that this
wouldn't effect the editorial process at all, ie it doesn't ensure that you
will actually be included if your site isn't worthy and doesn't mean that
your placing will be any better than sites submitted that don't pay.
Furthermore, last time I looked into this it only related to e-commerce
sites that would come under the category of 'Business & Economy: (whatever)'
(hence Packard Bell being classified as Business & Economy: Business To
Business: etc etc). So for the vast majority (if not all) of their listings
it's all down to editorial discretion and is absolutely free.
The information supplied by Google is merely supplementary to their
directory, in much the same way as that which was supplied by Inktomi used
to be.

Actually there's no mystery: they sell the technology services
behind the engine to other net businesses.

Though typing in 'speech radio', a far more likely
event, yields no such bounty. Though a single entry
at #4 is still not too shabby.

Another mystery?
Well, it would appear that a person offers money
(or "bids") to the site in order that he/she appears
at or near the top of the search results when a
particular search term (or "keyword") is typed in
by a user.
Hence: "bidding for keywords".

Goole are now part of Yahoo (or vv) and you can pay for a Yahoo site
listing. And it can be 1000's. And check out the search for Packard bell
here...

This first page is the pay one and this is the one with all the free
results...
http://google.yahoo.com/bin/query?p=packardbell&hc=0&hs=4
Notice the URL...
We are just open about how much they are paying. The user is the commodity
and pays nothing.
