Wacky names have come about because on the net, brand is (almost) equal
to domain. People cannot find your site without something to associate
it to in their heads, so they need to be able to associate brand name
and domain name.
But as we all know, availability of .coms is somewhat limited, so you
have to be a bit creative. When I tried out kelkoo.co.uk the other week
I was quite impressed with the results, but couldn't for the life of me
work out how they came up with the name. But the important thing was
that I remembered it.

Which is a bit odd, I think. Why don't they just make use of the
well-established brands they already have?
It beats me why anyone who already has any accounts with Bigbank should
have to open a new account with them simply to use Bigbankwacky.com. Why
not simply access their existing account through the Bigbank.com domain
which they will find very easy to remember?

Probably the best reason of all to be going wacky in the first place.
