Subject: UKNM: Hosting Advice Wanted
From: Dan Winchester
Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 19:29:14 GMT

Apologies in advance for the non-marketing nature of this post...

[Sam says: due to the techie nature of the answers (unless there's a stack of people who're interested, in which case email me helpatchinwag [dot] com to let me know) can you reply to Dan directly, thanks]

I have a stand-alone server which I have various hosting options for, and I
want to be clear about which offer the best advantages. The options are:

1/ Pratically unlimited bandwidth at Tele2000

2/ Co-located on (shared) 4M pipe at our local ISP

3/ Leased line (eg 1M) straight into our office (in Reading)

The first option would seem at face value to be the best interests of
performance, but perhaps not convenience - although the server can be fully
administered remotely. What I am unsure about is just how big the difference
in performance would be for a Tele2000-hosted server as opposed to the other
two options. Does hosting at Tele2000 imply a direct connection to one of the
UK backbones?

If anyone knows where I can get hold of more info then please let me know.

Regards
Dan Winchester
