.com is the US commercial domain, I can remember when they were somwhat
sniffy if you wanted a .com and didn't have a US office!.
I have always understood this in relation to postage stamps, British
stamps don't have to have a country indentifier as the British started
international mail but all other countries have to identify themselves.
The country TLDs were created to identify countries as "not the USA" in
a similar manner.
