It must be April Fool's Month...
I have been following this Funmail thing with some interest. Leslie is
correct in his statements regarding the irresponsible approach undertaken
by Funmail regarding domain names. And it is 100% true that many offensive
names have been registered by certain organisations to prevent them being
misused. It was good to see Funmail come clean...
Having said that, I was a bit disturbed by Graham's orginal and defensive
response to Leslie. He seems to have missed the boat...slightly. Having
grown up in Washington, DC, I have plenty of black friends. When
socialising, many call each other 'nigger' during conversation...as in 'How
is it going, Nigger?' etc. Although I found the practice odd, I also
quickly found out that if I, or a white friend, used the word 'nigger' in
the same manner - it was not appreciated. In other words, 'nigger' was
acceptable only between my black friends. It was deemed offensive to
blacks the minute it came out of a non-black person.
The same goes for 'yid', although my Jewish friends seldom, if ever, refer
to one another in such terms. Because a small fraction of Also because
Tottenham's supporters call themselves the 'Yid Army', it does not mean
that it is a widespread habit of Tottenham fans to refer to themselves as
'Yids'. In fact many cringe when they hear it...I am a Spurs fan, and have
witnessed the cringing first hand.
Enough said on this matter...it is plain wrong to offer offensive domain
names...especially in an industry that is evolving and still looked at with
some degree of weariness by many. We dont need any more negative publicity
(the recent Denver tragedy had news sources refering to the two killers as
'Internet nerds'...great).
Sorry to hear Paki is gone Sajid...I tried looking for MadIranian and was
informed it went a looooong loooong time ago :)
