You're talking about a workstation v. playstation. I agree with that.
I do not, nor will I ever agree that teaching a child, an elderly adult,
or a physically disabled person to use a *learning* station is better
with a two or three or four button mouse. As a volunteer teacher,
educating in the use of mutiple platforms I tell you with long experience
this is not the case, in fact, the two button mouse *hinders* the
learning process greatly. It is simply one more overload factor to novice
to remember right click this, middle click that, left click here, but not
there, blah blah blah. . .
Once (if ever) a user is proficient with knowing how to navigate the
interface and just use a mouse at all, we quickly move them onto
multi-button input devices for actual productivity.
On the subject of fighter pilots, all buttons in one place, et al, I,
personally, hate mice and trackballs of any kind. Give me a custom
keyboard with programmable function keys and a flying mouse anyday; FM
attaches to your finger, has gyro to determine location, your
fingers/hand never leaves the keyboard, much like the laser-eye targeting
systems in modern warbirds. Add to that a drawing tablet, and I rarely
use even a trackball anymore, but do attach several programmable
muti-button devices just to get the programmable keys.
