Subject: FLASH: Increased backbone speed
From: John Croteau

Hi all,

"The numbers are staggering: Six major new national fiber-optic networks
will come on line during the next two years at a cost of $18 billion.
Those new networks are in addition to those already built and operated
by the Big Three of long-distance: AT&T, MCI WorldCom and Sprint."

The problem is most of the new backbones will all be in the same places.
So we will have super connectivity along certain corridors. This will
likely lead to much better bandwidth and lower cost for those connected
to the web along the corridors. The competion will be fierce and it is
unlikely that all 6 of these startups will still be around in five years
but most likely the fiber will still be in use.

All this fiber is being laid and put in place during the next two years.
Only about half of the US is likely to benefit from this new fiber.
Internationally there will be little benefit. In fact it is likely that
many more internationals will have sites located in the US to enable
their participation in this high bandwidth market.

In the near future (1-2 years) a major portion of US web will become
high bandwidth capable. How much this will be will depend on how much
DSL and cable modems prices drop as well as how these companies maintain
their connections to the web backbone.

What's this have to do with Flash?
A lot..........
Quite simply -- how will Flash 5 handle the needs for both high and low
bandwidth needs (possibly at the same time)? I think that this is
likely to be what should make Flash 5 - Flash 5.

At present we have people who use Flash 3/4 for intranets and some who
also place files on the Web that work well (or could) only for those
with T1, DSL or Cable type speed connections. These uses are pushing the
limits of Flash 4. Flash 5 neeeds to be able to step up - to be able to
handle the larger file size and speed increases we will be needing. At
the same time we need a way to easily create high and low bandwidth
versions at the same time. High bandwidth will be a major portion but
low bandwidth will still dominate.
