Oh, one other thing I'd like to point out/canvas opinion on..

Since Flash converts all bitmaps to JPEG's when they're exported, is it ever
a good idea to use GIF or JPEG's as source files?

GIFs lose colour depth, and JPEG's (generally) lose image quality, so isn't
it more sensible to import all images as BMPs (or PICTs for Mac people)?

I haven't spent lots of time compressing JPEGs, bringing them into an
uncompressed form, manipulating them, and recompressing them, but I can't
believe it wouldn't damage the quality.
