Shockwave is a viewer used to run flash and Director based movies. It simply allows a way for you to watch these fine pieces of work. If someone didn't have the viewer then they would have to download the files then run them in flash or director. I hopes this has helped.

Hi I am just learning Flash and its great
to see there is such an active list.
I think it will be a while before I can
comprehend all the posts.
But, why would someone use Flash over Shockwave?
  I thought Shockwave might be a thing of the past
but I see there is afterburner also.
