You bet.

That's the big misconception about Wintel laptops, that the included
processor at a like-speed MHz is even remotely as fast as its desktop
counterparts, but all Wintel mobile chips are seriously crippled units
because of heat issues (a P-III desktop draws 44 watts). The chips in
PowerBooks are the same as their desktop bretheren (a G3 draws about 8
watts), and thus can handle the same workload (excluding any bottlenecks
relieved by anything faster than FireWire).

Just be sure you get a full 1MB of backside cache, and not one of the
older 512k L2 models for video work.

Check out 'Always Walk' , a movie made entirely on a G3-292 PowerBook.

That one was made with AvidCinema, the new PowerBooks run it even better,
and also can host FinalCutPro for full DV input/output, and, conceivably,
iMovie (FinalCutLite), which is available with the new iMacDV models.

To see just how slick iMovie is, check out the iMac broadcast from
Tuesday (QT4 steaming only), at about an hour and 25 minutes in (I think)
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/showcase/live/appleevent99/

There are numerous other video editing solutions to use with PowerBooks.

If your pal isn't in too big of a hurry, he is well-advised to hang out
till January-ish, when the new G4 PowerBook line will come out, which
will host the AltiVec- enhanced FinalCutPro, which will render at least
twice as fast as a like-speed G3 (and will also be AirPort-ready at
11Mb/sec, host a minimum 2xAGP, standard PC-100 or 133 RAM, and much,
much more).

While there is considerable rumor that the Lombard (Bronze G3-333 -
G3-400) line will have G4 upgrade options within 6-10 months, no real
discussion has been put forth supporting the same for the Wallstreet
models (G3-233 - G3-333), so be careful if you gamble with one of these
models.
