MacHero? Gee, golly . . . (;

OK, here's the scoop as I understand it:

The only folks having disconnect problems are those whose ISPs don't
support multihoming PPP, or who've not properly configured either v.90 of
K56Flex.

Those whose ISPs are setup properly do not experience this issue. It
really is the ISP's fault at the heart of the whole thing, though it does
seem as though it's Apple's (and then it's actually it's bloody
GlobalVillage). Changing your ISP is the first obvious solution.

I know this doesn't help you much, but some of the workarounds have
included making sure 'AppleTalk' is set to 'RemoteOnly', and that you
have PPP set properly to avoid the disconnects and also to have TCP/IP to
'Load Only When Needed'.

Try this thread (even though it addresses another problem) for the
desired settings:

Once you have the correct settings, you may just need to change your
modem scripts to suit your ISP.

Laz (my MacHero) has set up a nice set of do it yourself scripts to get
the modem working as best it can:

I also know that throwing money at problems isn't a palateable solution,
either, but OS9's rework of the entire OpenTransport model seems to have
also magically glossed-over the problem.

Finally, and I know the solution sucks, but if you replace the internal
modem with a gPort card (Serial card for the modem slot), and revert to
any external Serial modem, you'll be much happier, and also get voice
capabilities.

Apple will fix this problem eventually, if you can't find a way to get
your ISP to fix the problem on their end. Until then, it's suffer or
workaround it.
