It's just a computer... manipulates bits. It can't think very well. You
might try the one-or-all tests to confirm that a simple import into a new
file shows what you expect, and you can then trim the differences between
the two cases.

Need to freshen a bitmap? Hit that "Update" button in its Library Info.

Other tidbits: Symbols not used in the timeline will not be compiled into a
SWF. (The exception to this is if you set its linkage to external in F5, in
which it must be compiled into the SWF.) Deleting a symbol won't change the
FLA filesize... do a "Save As" to rewrite the file from top to bottom (a
regular "Save" just appends changes).
