Thanks to those of you who responded. your suggestions and supportiveness 

helped me through. Turns out this was a rather mysterious problem; after 

transferring the disk to another machine and back again, it now works fine, 

but not without a lot of other testing and agonizing. Of course I'm now 

busy backing up all my data!
