Subject: Re: FLASH: You think Shockwave is truly the future of the web

We do a lot of work now with XML but it's value is not for use in direct
browser rendering. Yes, technically it can be used that way but it is not
meant as a layout/pagination language. The heart of XML lies in structuring
data according to your or an industry accepted definition (DTD). This makes
development, especially when integrating Flash and databases, so much simpler
and more universal.

We have used XML for creating automated publishing modules to allow editors to
update content according to rules which will allow for seamless syndication to
other sites while still leaving the design and layout to the programmers and
architects. For rendering, it is simple enough to use XSL or any other style
sheet as the final processing and thus remains flexible. The critical piece of
xml for us is removing the pagination/layout parameters from the content.
