QT should be able to open the .avi directly if you are
using indeo 4.4 or below, if it can't (and you have QT
4 pro with the indeo 4.4 codec installed) then you may
be exporting using indeo 5 or another codec that QT
can't read. Not sure about the sound issue, what are
your sound settings in the .avi tab?
