Frankly SVG will result in hugely bloated files sizes and hugely bloated
file viewers, and the potential performance for animating this stuff through
DOM and javascript is pretty damned low. What SVG does allow for is the
leveraging of the huge *ML movement that encompasses HML, XML, XSL, XQL, etc
etc etc, and for that reason, and that reason alone, might it succeed.

Take a look at the history of VRML. This format went absolutely nowhere,
simply because 3D is far too damned complex to be enshrined in a "markup
language" of any kind. About the only sensible thing I ever saw that came
out of the VRML effort was the development of a compressed binary file
format which allowed for a 10-100 factor of compression to be acheived.
Flash already uses many of the techniques from that file format.

The advantages of having a text-based format for representing vector media
are that its easy for low grade programmers to produce programs which
manipulate such structures. The problem is that its also easy for every
company with a few decent coders to 'embrace and extend' the format, thus
fragmenting it. I prefer a well-documented and extensible binary format, or
at least to release a compiler/compressor which produces compact media in
parralel with a text-based format.

Look around you. The most engaging media you will find, and the ones at the
forefront of technology, all use and need compressed binary formats - jpeg,
mp3, mpeg video, flash, java, exe, etc etc. Anyone whos telling you, the
viewer, that you need text based formats is wasting your bandwidth and your
cycles.
