Subject: RE: FLASH: Best Graphic Format

WEll well...

As far as importing pixel-based graphics goes, I found this out by trial and
error, if you import jpegs into flash, the resulting swf comes out even
larger than if you were just to import the bmp version of the pic. This must
be because the jpeg is already compressed, not really giving room for flash
to do it's own nifty compression. Obviously gifs are quite useful for
transparecny and small size, but offer less of a colour range than a bmp
would. As far as transparency goes though, the png format (best from MM
Fireworks, but also works from Photoshop5) works like a charm.

FOr vector stuff? Well, when I had Freehand7 and tried experimenting with
Corel Draw, it was always a tossup between exporting as wmf's, eps's or ai's
(adobe illustrator). The problem comes in with text, and basically anything
with a "hole" in it, like the letters "D, g, e, a" for instance -they don't
import nicely at all. Also the same for any "punched" sections in Freehand
drawings. I suppose copying and pasting does work for simpler stuff. With
Freehand 8 however, you can just export straight as an swf!! Everything
works great except for horizontal/radial gradient fills in Freehand. These
have to be re-created in Flash.
