You can import the swf file into the Flash authoring (if it is not
protected), but unless all you need is the image of the map, it is
virtually useless for updating and exporting back out as an SWF file. On
an imported SWF file everything is compressed onto one layer and lots of
stuff will be missing. You will get the graphics from the main timeline.
Your buttons and their links are not recoverable by this method nor
easily with any of the tools I am aware of. Actually, your best bet is
to get that backup file.
If you set the Protect from Import then you need to eliminate the
protection. There are toools that can remove the protection or extract
components, but I have no idea how well they work on Flash 4 files and
they are available for Windows and Unix only. Email me direct if you
need these and let me know what operating system.
