Instead of an EPS, you could export your Illustrator 8 file as a swf
with the FlashWriter add-on to Illustrator, free at
http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/download/flashwriter/contents.html.
Then you just import it into Flash, break it apart and there you go.
(Check technotes for some layer issues if you're doing this on a Mac).
