Ellis,

this is entirely from an art viewpoint:

for animating human figures - or anything squashy stretchy for that matter,
there is no better reference than Preston Blair's "How to Draw and Paint
Cartoon Animation" and "How to Animate Film Cartoons" which is published by
Walter Foster books. (yes those dubious slim pamphlets with other titles
like "How to Draw Cats" and "Floral Designs to Copy".) You can find them
(usually on a stepped rack like comic books) in any good large art supply
store.

Before you get all "no way" about this, as a member of the (late) Screen
Cartoonists Union Local 841, I have had occasion to meet and work with a LOT
of animators. They all have this book. I have bought over 6 copies of it
over the years and each has been stolen by interns : )

the book costs about 8$ these days.

have fun,

catherine

ps. from a flash standpoint, do what Jason just said:

> basically looked like you just described it, a lot of layers and keyframes
> to get small animations. One thing I did notice though was he used a lot of
> nested movie clips for his animations.
