It makes sense what you say... I'd generally say that if you can use what
the product offers within its price, then it's worth it. I mean, I'm not
griping about the third-party Xtra called "3dGroove" just because they want
like $40,000 for a year license (or something like that see:
http://www.3dgroove.com/)... I just won't use it. I simply don't have any
jobs that would justify it. If I did, I'd use it.
Similarly, Generator looks pretty expensive... but if I could make a case
for it (or, more accurately) for my clients... we'd pay.
But as for Director (or Flash), one would hope that you can justify the
price of the software many times over... so that the actual cost for
software is a very small part of your total investment.
Another way to look at the price of software is as a "subscription". I
figure Director is upgraded every 18 months or so...for about 300-400 per
platform. I just budget that in and keep on paying. I suppose Macromedia
likes people who just fork it over... but I like the way I can make money
using the software too.
