All of those things, actually.

The key: Do as few of those types of things at the same time as possible.

There are tricks--do an alpha fade quickly, THEN move your piece versus move and
alpha fade at the same time--if you can master this, you can trick the human eye
into a lot of things.

There are other tips, but as Kevin Jackson would say--"I see the patented Russ
Unger alpha fades in there..." and that's where I started learning the tricks to
optimizing.
