I know that I am using the older Artpad II, but I guess the technology
worked in the same way. The pen must contain some kind of electronic array
that interacts with the pad. I do not know how this kind of pen would work
without the pad. My guess is that the Wacom pens do need the pad. The again,
perhaps the newer pens work on a RF transmitter.

Someone told me that a pad isn't really necessary .. a good pen on a
flat surface is just as good and cheaper. I have no experience at all
with these input devices. I wanted to get an Intuos WACOM pad asap, but
now I'm not so sure. Also on their web site they are pretty much out of
stock, at least the 9" x 12" one. Anyone any experience with these pens
without a pad ?? ..
