This is not true for Flash. Any file size up to about 500K is just
fine IF it streams. For the general net it should stream when
connections are no faster than about 20K bits per second (2.5K bytes per
second). This is a good average for 28,800 or 33,600 Web connections.
What this means is a file of 750K will take 5 Minutes on an average
standard internet connection. If you don't have 5 minutes of preliminary
content then it isn't streaming for most people on the Web.
You should use Wait-for-Frame Animation loops to compensate for
slower connection speeds, a not uncommon situation even if you have high
speed connections. The best use of Wait-for-Frame Loops are ones that
the viewer isn't aware of. Loading bars and other Wait mechanisms are
most precise when using Wait-for-frame Loops.
Alan's site is impressive but it's size is substantually larger than
it should be if it is meant for the Web in its present form. But, Alan
warned us and said 'it's quite a big swf-file at the moment' indicating
he knows it is large (maybe he should have specified its size). As for
the content it would seem like if properly optimized, it should be more
like 100K than 700K. If Alan's site is meant for a Company Intranet or
users with pipeline T1 connections then the size is of little importance
and you can use higher quality sound and images with less optimization
needed.
