I'd like to add my two cents worth here also. As a composer/sound-designer,
I have to deal with these issues every day. some here may not realise the
extent that the law actually cover certain works, especially audio.
Any clip, and I mean ANY, even if it is only 1 snare drum whack out of the
middle of Carl Palmer's drum solo from the first Emerson Lake and Palmer
album, which was recorded back when, the early 70's? is copyrighted. Now,
chances of anyone figuring out exactly where you GOT that snare whack is
pretty slim, but if it can be proved, you're liable if the owner, probably
Carl Palmer, can prove that's where you got it.
Doesn't have to be a recognisable melody, chord progression or anything. A
single note is enough if it can be proved that it was lifted from someone's
album without prior permission.
