In case this helps you (or anybody) next time around.
Based on what you are saying your drive was bad for quite a while before you
went down for good. This can go on for a year (or more) sometimes. Solution:
get a high-quality drive to begin with and get an app like Norton disk
doctor to check it every now and then. If you constantly have freezes
irregardless of your Extension manager settings and Norton keeps telling you
the drive is messed up, replace it. You can still use it as a backup or
capture drive. Most people ignore these warnings and then it's too late.
Drives can limp along a lot longer than people realise, they are not
lighbulbs. Also, I have rescued a few drives with a little creative Norton
action that techs had said were lost for good.
