For most parties with most applications, it is a whole-hearted and
enthusiastic recommendation. The new nanokernal uses less power, and is
much faster and more stable, as is VM and other System extents/controls.
The additional features like Sherlock, Navigation Services and many
others are damn hard to live without, once you use them for awhile.

That said, 8.1 was a dandy, reasonably stable System on the older
non-native G3 Macs, so, if you're happy, and if you want to hold out for
OS9 in the Fall, or OS X in Q1 2k, you could easily get by.

Remember, if you use multiple volumes, or have the ability to do a backup
of the size of your current System Folder, you can always upgrade to 8.6,
try it out, if you have a problem not solved by installing the various
application updates (very, very few obscure stuff are left), you can
instantly revert to 8.1 with no data loss or application reinstalls.

Or, If you have multiple volumes, you can run most apps under 8.6, and
revert to 8.1 on a second volume for the apps that aren't ready for 8.6.

If you need advisement on what you will need to update to go to 8.6
safely, write me *privately* for assitance.
