Hi,
fwiw from someone new, but having been a businessman with a long history of
selling merchandise to the most major of US retailers and having just made my
first site quote, I used a total price with contract language that gave both
sides a comfort level if major changes were required.
IMO (and I hesitate to even comment as I am not one of the "old guys" in the
site development business), hourly contracts can be scary, especially to
entities large enough to have budgets that they have to live with.
trust is, of course, a major factor in this whole thing as it is impossible to
really quantify every last possible eventuality (up front) given the
ambiguities in design, browser compatibility, etc.........especially so as it
would seem that very often, the people responsible for "get us on the web"
don't likely have a clue as to the many variables in this process.
finally, it would also, I think, depend on the size of the job, client and the
client's politics of buying and paying for things.
major companies are used to paying lawyers by the hour, but not necessarily
other kinds of contractors, with buyers being generally unwilling, especially
if something is to be very visible, to risk their careers on variables beyond
their control.
