I guess it really depends on how serious you are. I mean there are all sort
of programs availbe to download from the web freeware/shareware etc..

But if you are serious some good ones are:
Truespace (One of the cheepest for the buck)
3Dstudio Max (More professional so cost goes up)
Lightwave (Same as above)
Bryce (Awesome for outdoor scenes)
Softimage (Very Professional, However you have to have some bucks to get
this bad boy! Awsome web site though http://www.softimage.com)

All good 3d programs these days are a little nerve racking, because you
have to learn the terminology and their complex user interfaces. For
starting out Truespace has been really good for me.

I would suggest getting books and the web is a valuable place for resourses
